If you’ve never been through the process of getting a Georgia driver's license, it may seem to be quite an ordeal.  But it’s really not as difficult as it seems. Follow these 3 steps below and be sure to download and complete the required forms and you’ll have no problems at all.  

1. Standard Requirements You Must Meet

  • You must be at least 16 years of age
  • You must have completed a Joshua Law compliant Drivers Education Course
  • You must have held your Permit License for more than one year.
  • A parent or legal guardian must be present and must present a Georgia Driver  License or ID card when you apply for your First License (Class D)

2. Documents You Need to Bring

  • An authentic United States birth certificate (a copy of the birth certificate is acceptable, provided it is certified and has the embossed state seal).
  • Original immigration documents (non-expired) are required of non United States citizens.
  • You must present your social security number. If you are not a citizen, you may instead give a Social Security Denial Letter, Form SSA L676.
  • A signed Georgia DDS Certificate of Attendance (DS – 1) that is notarized by your school. Applicants under 18 years of age who are not attending school need to provide proof of college enrollment, or either a GED diploma or high school diploma. If a student is enrolled in a home school program which is approved, he/she must submit a Certificate of Attendance, available from their Board of Education.

3. Tests You’ll Need to Pass

  • A knowledge exam, consisting of two parts, dealing with Road Signs and Rules. The material covered by this exam is based on the information featured in our course as well as the Georgia Driver’s Manual.
  • This knowledge exam is proctored at all DDS Customer Service Centers on a walk-in basis. You must begin testing a minimum of 30 minutes before the office closes.

Important Information about Your Permit

  • It is required that you pay your DDS fee prior to the beginning of the test; forms of payment accepted by the DDS are cash, check, money order, or debit/credit cards.
  • This fee is not refunded if the test is failed. You’ll have to pay a fee for each additional attempt if you decide to retake the test.
  • The permit is valid for 2 years (24 months).
  • You may only drive if accompanied by a driver with a license who is at least 21 years of age. The licensed driver must always be seated in the car’s front seat.

New DDS Requirements

  • You are not allowed to apply for or retain either a driver’s license or permit if you are a minor (under 18 years of age) and you withdraw from school, or have 10 total unexcused absences or conduct infractions of any kind.
  • After you receive your license, if you get a traffic citation, your license could potentially be suspended. Paying the fee for the citation does not mean that your license suspension will be revoked.
